  Axes are ancient tools that first show up in the archaeological record about 5,000 years ago – but without any clear evidence of the work they might have done. Axes were an important and integral tool for humans in the Stone Age. Early axes were small and light, made of copper or jade. These weapons would have been used to butcher animals or to chop wood; they were in those early days not intended as a weapon or battle tool. The first battle axes date from around 2000 BC, made of bronze and iron with a long handle called a “haft” which helped balance the weight of the head (or blade) at the other end.
